The scans you have on the ACM site load on my screen in a posterised form. They have a limited number of colours versus the full colour scans I had on my site. I've asked about this before hoping for someone else to compare but nobody did. But I have just loaded one again and its posterised so It must be a problem with the pics you have on your site C. I will do a pic and upload it to show you what I mean C.
Hooorayyy for Andy! This has been bothering me a long time as I thought the ones on ACM were posterised. At last I have confirmation they aren't..so thank you Andy. Thumbs up.
Now for the life of me I can't understand why they download like this for me.
When I had them on my own page I cleared all cache and re-downloaded them to make sure they were faithful (as a double check to filesize in the ftp program). They were the faithful to my originals and it also suggests my PC can handle the image sizes. So that rules out a few ideas.
It is only this series of pictures that download like this from the ACM site. And I've never had this on any other website either (so you can see how I thought the series on ACM.com were the problem).
And there's no way I could still have a dud version of each on my own PC (I know my cache clearing works due to experiments I've done and I never had posterised ones anyway).
We need Sherlock Holmes!
Any ideas anyone? I am completely completely baffled!
O'key, I'll try to help you. First, what kind of operating system are you using (what version, service packs etc.), what browser? Do you use any download managers for downloading pics? Second, you wrote: 'It is only this series of pictures that download like this from the ACM site.' Does it mean some of the pics from acm.com are downloaded qualitative?
(Awkward bit: Service packs is odd...some show as unsuccessful installations on Windows Update webpages. Some show Unsuccessful with Belarc Advisor. The Successful/Unsuccessful installation lists are not the same in Belarc/Windows Update - so I don't know what is successful / unsuccessful).
I have a DL manager (Old ReGet version) but don't use it for pictures...only video clips.
The series I refer to are specifically the first twelve pics on this page
1. Try to download any of the pics by your ReGet or any other download manager and open it in a viewer (ACDSee (version 7 would be better) or IrfanView for example). If I’m not mistaken in Win98 pictures are opened in IE by default, so DO NOT open them in Internet Explorer! What is the result?
2. Install and try to open the pics by a different browser – I can advise you Mozilla Firefox or Opera – IMHO the first is better (in addition it’s free).
And I’ve got another question – as far as I understand the pics you can’t download properly are your own scans, aren’t they? If it is so did you use any soft for preparing the pictures and if you did what kind of soft? I have some more thoughts, but first try what I’ve written.
I’m waiting for your report!
PS. I see you’re a quite good linguist – you wrote here in German, now in Russian!
