Powerline Ethernet describes data transfer over electrical power lines. Measured speeds in non-lab conditions for electrical internet adapters indicate practical speeds of 30-45 Mbps. This depends on encryption, the circuitry of the electrical system, and other electrical interference. There is not a lot of difference between gigabit Ethernet and 200 MBps in terms of speeds.
I have my DSL wireless/modem/router in the basement and have no problem getting a signal throughout my 2 story home. I use a Zyxel P330W router in "wireless client bridge mode" like a remote wireless switch to connect my desktop ethernet and old laptop (wireless PC card is fried). Some routers are capable of that, most are not, but some (like Linksys) can be with 3rd party firmware (dd-wrt).
